Sugar-sweetened drinks
A major source of added sugars in the diet; the link to weight gain and chronic disease is described as causal.
Overview
Sugar-sweetened drinks are named a major source of added sugars in the diet. The review that pools the evidence on them states its conclusion more strongly than nutrition science usually allows: cohort data on clinical outcomes together with trials on risk factors support an aetiological role of these drinks in weight gain and cardiometabolic disease, not merely an association. What price does to consumption has been measured separately: a systematic review of 21 studies of taxes on such drinks found consumption, sales and purchases falling as price rose in fourteen cases out of sixteen.
Quality indicators
- State of the evidence
Cohorts and trials point the same way
More detail
The review separately examines how the strength of evidence is graded in nutrition science and reaches a consistent conclusion: cohort studies of clinical outcomes and trials of risk factors give the same answer.
Health-related indicators
- Long-term risk
An aetiological role in weight gain and cardiometabolic disease
More detail
The review states its conclusion more strongly than nutrition science usually allows: cohort data on clinical outcomes together with trials on risk factors support an aetiological role of sugar-sweetened drinks in weight gain and cardiometabolic disease. Habitual intake is linked to a raised risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
Regulatory notes
- What the authorities say
Taxed in many countries; consumption falls as price rises
More detail
A systematic review of 21 studies of taxes on such drinks across countries of different income levels: of sixteen selected studies only two did not show consumption, sales and purchases falling as price rose. In eight of thirteen, a fall in overweight prevalence was also expected.
