Nutritional profile of plant-based drinks and cow’s milk: 96 products by one method
The study compares 96 plant-based drinks from the Colombian market with cow’s milk using the Health Star Rating method. The differences sit in protein, added sugars and calcium; skimmed milk ranked highest overall, then whole milk, and among plant-based drinks soy and cashew.
The order among plant-based drinks in the study is: soy and cashew, then almond and oat and blends of several sources, then rice, and coconut last.
The authors’ conclusion is reported as they state it: none of the plant-based drinks examined is an adequate nutritional substitute for cow’s milk — and three measures are named as the basis: protein, added sugars and calcium.
The assessment is built on label data for products available in Medellín and on reported market launches. That limits transferring the conclusion to other markets, where composition and fortification differ.
